AN impressive piece of art produced by two Marian College students has filled a prominent spot at Ararat RSL in memory of ANZACS.

Marian College VCAL students have been studying the ANZACS and the important of their legacy.

Their studies include re-enacting the movie Gallipoli, producing a slideshow on WW1 and WW2 and crafting poppies in various mediums including metal, tissue paper, plastic bottles, 3D printing, polymer clay, wood and paint.

Students Jacob Van Straaten and Thomas Bartlett are both of the view that the ANZAC story should be more prominent across society, including the classroom, and they wanted to produce something special.

The pair decided to make a metal display of poppies and a soldier kneeling at a grave of one of his fallen mates.

They cut out the poppies and display using a CNC plasma cutter and then MIG welded all of the cut outs together to make the display.

Jacob and Thomas said staff at the school were very supportive of their efforts to create a reflective and dignified sculpture to honour all servicemen.

“Especially Wayne Dickinson, who served in the Zimbabwe Arms and has taught us welding techniques and guided us with the CNC plasma cutter,” they said.

“Our head of Applied Learning Dani Smith, whose son is currently serving in the ADF, was also an enormous help.”

RSL President Frank Neulist met with the students last week and said he was blown away by their gift.

“I was really surprised to see the amount of work and thought they put into it.”

Mr Neulist said the piece was on display for people to see as they enter the RSL, but he was keen to find it a more permanent home.

“We are redesigning the RSL currently and when out architect comes up next, we want him to remodel our old reception area and I’m going to see if he can find it a permanent, prominent place for this piece of art,” Mr Neulist said.

“These students have looked into the past at what their forebears did during the war and this is their way of respecting what they did and remembering them in a very visual form,” he said.
