LOCAL firearm owners will have to update their storage facilities by the end of August, following the implementation of new legislation.<\/p>\n
New regulations indicate license holders must store firearms in commercial made steel storage receptables, which meet Australian standards; prohibiting the use of hard-wood storage units.<\/p>\n
The steel used must be at least 1.6 millimetres thick and weigh more than 150 kilograms when empty, to avoid having it bolted to the structure of the premise.<\/p>\n
The receptable must also be locked with a \u2018lock of sturdy construction when the firearm is stored inside\u2019.<\/p>\n
The new storage regulations come into effect from 30 August.<\/p>\n
Lyal Eales Stores has ordered in extra stock of gun safes to meet demand over coming months.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll our gun safes comply with the new regulations. Our gun safes are 2 millimetres thick – the new regulations sate 1.6 millimetres thick so we are 25% thicker than the regulation states. That can only be a good thing,\u201d owner Lyal Eales told the Advocate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have lots of stock but are selling fast. My only suggestion is to get in quick. We have 3, 5, and 12 gun safes in stock now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
