THERE’s been a changing of the guard at Ararat Neighbourhood House, with Talwinder Kaur taking over as the new manager.

Ms Kaur, also known as Teli, officially commenced on the 16th of May after former manager Lou Makin moved interstate.

She had volunteered at the neighbourhood house for three years leading up to her appointment as manager. She helped with the Food Hub, and also took on an administrative role during COVID.

Ms Kaur was encouraged to apply for the position, one which she describes as “interesting.”

Ms Kaur, her husband, and their two children have lived in Ararat for 11 years. Before this, they spent two years in Ballarat where she studied for three hospitality qualifications.

“This is my first job in this sector,” she said.

To augment what she brings to the role, Ms Kaur is in her final semester of study at Federation University, where she has taken a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Management.

“At the moment, I’m focusing on day-to-day activities,” she said, and described her first few weeks as manager as “busy.”

Busy is right – Ararat Neighbourhood House runs English classes on a Monday, computer classes and book chat on Tuesdays, knitting group Wednesdays, hires out rooms for CVGT and First Aid courses on Thursdays, and runs NDIS art-focussed social groups on a Friday.

Ms Kaur said the House needs one more volunteer and a few more on back-up to help with their Food Hub program. This person would be responsible for collecting fresh produce from local supermarket and delivering it to the Food Hub for the Second Bite program.

The current volunteers collect food from Woolworths Monday to Friday, at 11.20am, and from Aldi on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8.20am.

Neighbourhood house will pay for volunteers’ Police and Working with Children’s checks.

10 to 12 people come into the Food Hub every day to collect food items such as fruit, vegetables, and bread.

“There are no criteria,” she said when asked who can access the Food Hub, which is free.

People can also take a free copy of a cookbook, which features recipes that utilize the ingredient found in the Food Hub.

The Ararat Neighbourhood Watch team are hoping to bring back their basic cooking skills program, which was put on hold during Covid, for people who are not sure how to use the items they take from the Food Hub.

Ms Kaur is looking to the future as manager of Neighbourhood House. In a few months, she hopes to launch a migration program, in which she will help migrants fill in their visa applications and assist them in understanding the criteria.

“That’s my passion,” she said.

Ms Kaur and her family intend to stay put in town. She grew up in a rural area in India, so country living suits her well.

“It’s beautiful, nice, and quiet here,” she said.

THERE’s been a changing of the guard at Ararat Neighbourhood House, with Talwinder Kaur taking over as the new manager.
