A number of Elmhurst firefighters have been recognised for bravery following their actions to help save a man in 2019.

Jonathon Keith, Sarah Keith, Justin McKenzie, Geoff Penna, Geoff Rogers and Steven Whiting of Crowlands were joined by off duty South Australian fire fighters Peter Wilson and Mark Stephens to help save the man from a burning house near Elmhurst Hotel.

The eight attended a Victoria Police Awards Investiture Ceremony last Friday at the Police Academy in Melbourne to be recognised with a Citizen’s Commendation for their efforts on the 28th of December, 2019.

Six local CFA members were socialising next to the fire station when they received a call that a nearby residence was on fire with a disabled man trapped inside.

Both Mr Wilson and Mr Stephens were camping in the Elmhurst area at the time and raised the alarm.

Off-duty Leading Senior Constable Grant Healey was one of the first on the scene and crawled through the burning house in an attempt to save the occupant. He was recently recognised with the Victoria Police Valour Award.

Leading Senior Constable Healey was familiar with the house and its resident and knew he would be unable to escape without help.

He attempted to gain access through the front door while CFA member Geoff Penna rushed to the scene in the fire tanker and put it in place for CFA volunteers Geoff Rogers, Steve Whiting and Jonathan Keith to begin tending to the intense fire.

Leading Senior Constable Healey together with Mr Wilson entered via the rear of the house before quickly retreating due to the intensity of the fire.

Leading Senior Constable Healey then re-entered the house with only a handkerchief over his face, and wearing shorts, a t-shirt and thongs, and slid along on his stomach to locate the resident.

Justin McKenzie entered the house to assist with dragging the resident to the backyard.

Other volunteers commenced CPR and defibrillation on the resident, however he was sadly unable to be revived.

Last Friday’s prestigious commendation awards were presented by Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent.

Victoria Police Citizen Commendation criteria is “awarded to a community member who has performed a conspicuous act or provided exemplary service in connection with Victoria Police operations or who deserve recognition by Victoria Police for a conspicuous act or exemplary service to the community”.

Each certificate, signed by the Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, bears the citation “for a conspicuous act at Elmhurst on the 28th December, 2019, where in dangerous and volatile circumstances provided direct assistance to police in rescuing a disable resident who was trapped in a house engulfed with fire and smoke in an attempt to save his life”.
