WILLAURA baker Peter Sporton set himself a challenge last week to raise $1,000 for motor neurone disease through the sale of blue vanilla slices.<\/p>\n
The response was overwhelming.<\/p>\n
The decision to back the FightMND campaign was personal for Peter after his cousin\u2019s husband died from the disease in April.<\/p>\n
David Steele was just 53 years old and was just short of raising $50,000 for FightMND when he died.<\/p>\n
Peter was expecting to make 100 vanilla slices at $10 each to help reach David\u2019s target of $50,000, but then people power kicked in.<\/p>\n
The phone at the bakery started ringing and ringing and ringing and the orders kept coming in.<\/p>\n
People dropped into the bakery with cash donations, others travelled miles to get their hands on a blue vanilla slice.<\/p>\n
Local businesses like Ray White, Gorst Rural, Growmaster Grampians and the local Willaura-Lake Bolac Community Bank bought trays and trays of vanilla slices.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was overwhelming,\u201d Peter said.<\/p>\n
On Saturday night, Peter messaged the Ararat Advocate to say his blue vanilla slice raised $3,601 for FightMND.<\/p>\n
