SINCE arriving at Ararat Rural City Council, CEO Tim Harrison admits one of his greatest frustrations has been lack of progress on the restorations of the town’s historic fountain.

Work on plumbing and wiring was completed over two years ago, but the contractor charged with carrying out the restoration disappeared during the pandemic and hasn’t resurfaced.

All that’s needed for the project to be completed is a cherub and some orbs.

Dr Harrison said he has been incredibly frustrated by the lack of progress on the project, but finally there is some good news.

He told the Ararat Advocate this week, a new contractor has been sourced to carry out the remaining work.

“It’s a really frustrating project but we have a new contractor on deck, I’ve just spoken to the engineer running that project for us and he’s told me there is now a 3D model of the cherub in place to cast the new cherub.”

“Our contractor said a couple of weeks ago it is close to completion but I’ll believe it when I see it like everyone else,” he said.

Dr Harrison remains quietly confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“Hopefully we’ll soon see the cherub appear on the top of the fountain. I’m very much looking forward to it happening and I know many people in the community are looking forward to its completion as well.”

Dr Harrison said the incomplete fountain has been a thorn in his side since day one.

“There are a few niggling (unfinished) projects but that’s the most public and embarrassing,” he said.

“I think people will just be relieved when it is finished. It is a beautiful piece of heritage architecture, it looks beautiful against the town hall and it will be great to see it complete,” Dr Harrison said.

The Ararat Memorial Fountain is one of only three in Victoria, the other two are located in Williamstown and Hamilton.

The restoration of the fountain was announced in July 2018 after $67,000 was secured from the Federal Government as well as a $10,000 donation from Ararat Community Enterprise.
