ARARAT Rural City Council hopes algal blooms in Alexandra Lake will soon be a thing of the past with several aerators to be installed in coming weeks.<\/p>\n
Council CEO Tim Harrison said three new aerators have arrived at council\u2019s depot and will soon be installed at the lake.<\/p>\n
Blue-green algae developed in the lake in March due to limited water flow and a high nutrient load in the water.<\/p>\n
At the time, council quickly commenced excavations works to allow water to flow more freely and placed an order for three new fountains to help aerate the water.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have the three new fountains up at the depot along with the weights and the cables and it\u2019s ready to go, we\u2019re just waiting for an electrician to come and connect up the power.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a tricky job there and we need a specialist electrician to come and do it, we\u2019re waiting for their availability,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully in a few weeks we\u2019ll be able to see beautiful water spurting out of the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s pretty cold at the moment so there probably isn\u2019t blue-green algae blooming but there is always a risk of that occurring again and aeration is a really good preventative measure.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the three fountains are running and we\u2019ve got oxygen running through the water we\u2019ll be in an improved position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lake is a beautiful feature of our town as are the gardens and in the next 12 months with the one and a half million dollars we\u2019ve got to spend in the budget around community asset renewal we\u2019ll be able to do a significant amount of work in and around the gardens,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, health alerts continue to be issued for Lake Bolac due to high levels of blue-green algae.<\/p>\n
Parks Victoria this week said the algal bloom is expected to remain until there is significant rainfall to flush the lake.<\/p>\n
Regular testing is being conducted to identify new outbreaks or changes that might indicate improved water quality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
