LOCAL Police are patrolling backroads across Ararat Rural City in a bid to curve the number of accidents and deaths on country roads.<\/p>\n
Operation SPEEDIE ties in with the Victorian Police Road Safety Strategy that states death and serious injury are not inevitable, they are preventable!<\/p>\n
Ararat Police members as well as officers based in Elmhurst, Willaura and Lake Bolac are regularly patrolling quieter country roads and running random speed tests in an effort to get drivers to slow down.<\/p>\n
Operation SPEEDIE is tasked with speed limit enforcement around the Ararat District, specifically on quieter roads.<\/p>\n
The idea is for police members to conduct speed detection on roads the public would not normally expect police to be patrolling.<\/p>\n
Each year, Victoria records on average 200 lives lost to road trauma, 8000 people are hospitalised for serious injury and a further 1,2000 are injured.<\/p>\n
Motor vehicles driven in excess of the speed limit are recognised as a major cause of serious injury and death collisions.<\/p>\n
Police say this type of behaviour exacerbates poor driving with alcohol and drugs also a contributing factor.<\/p>\n
