AFTER eleven years running the local post office at Moyston, Caron and Peter Fraser have moved on.

The Ararat Advocate called by last Thursday which was officially Caron and Peter’s last day.

The popular couple took over the post office licence in 2011 after the closure of the Moyston General Store.

“We didn’t really want to see the community lose the post office because it was such a vital part of the community. We were happy to take it on,” Caron said.

“We were running a farm gate business with out nuts that we grew at that time and we thought taking on the post office was a good idea because it would keep our farm gate business open.”

Eleven years later, Caron said she and husband Peter had made many new friends in the local community.

“Not everyone comes to get their mail but there are quite a number who do. You get to see and chat with the regulars a couple of times a week,” she said.

Caron and Peter have moved to Ballarat to retire and to be closer to services, but Caron admits she will miss the community she called home.

“Definitely. It’s only just dawned on me, today is my last day and I won’t be seeing everybody every day.”

I’ll definitely miss where we live too. It’s a real privilege to live here really in the environment we do, we’ve got a gorgeous view and a beautiful property. It’s an ideal spot really,” she said.

The new owners of the post office are former local Brian Humphrey and his wife Nicole.

The couple have been living in Maryborough, but Brian was keen to return home.

“I was working in disability but my husband Brian was originally from up this way so we had a plan in the back of our minds that we would love to return to the area and this opportunity came up,” she said.

“It’s a change and a beautiful place to be and it brings Brian back home,” Nicole said.

“Brian is looking forward to being back on a bit of property again and being part of the local community again,” she said.

Nicole said she was looking forward to the future and getting to know the local community.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge. Australia Post put you through a whole lot of training to be able to take on the post office and Caron and I have got together and she’s done a really comprehensive changeover as well.”

“I’ve got lots of names and faces to remember,” Nicole said.

The recent Moyston Community Dinner was held in honour of Caron and Peter Fraser, who were thanked by local community members for their service and commitment.

“It was really nice for the community to acknowledge us,” Caron said.
