EAST Grampians Health Service is saving tens of thousands of dollars on its annual power bill following the successful installation of a solar carpark.

The new system was installed on the roof of the health service’s new undercover carpark, providing shade and weather protection for visitors as well as contributing to energy generation on site.

A $650,000 grant from the Victorian Government allowed East Grampians Health Service to instal a 174kw solar PV system.

The new solar system was delivered in partnership with Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions Inc (BREAZE).

The solar carpark was officially opened on Wednesday by the Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford.

“It is wonderful to see organisations like East Grampians Health Service benefiting from a program that helps them reduce costs and helps us tackle climate change.”

“Our investment in renewable energy is allowing organisations to take charge of their energy consumption and direct the savings from their bills back to the community, all while reducing their emissions,” Ms Pulford said.

East Grampians Health Service President Nancy Panter said the service spends a large sum each year on gas and electricity.

“Through this solar project, EGHS is now producing a significant amount of its peak electricity requirements. Through the electricity we produce, you could say that the health service runs for half the day on solar power,” Ms Panter said.

“Financially this means that more that $6,000 in savings per month compared to pre-solar usage.”

“In the first year it is estimated we will save in excess of $76,000 in electricity costs as well as having less reliance on traditional power sources,” she said.

‘The solar carpark also provides protection from the elements for our patients and visitors, including shade in summer and shelter from the rain in winter,” Ms Panter said.

The solar carpark project is in addition to a 938 panel, 315kW solar project installed across buildings at the Ararat and Willaura campuses of East Grampians Health Service.

The estate of the late Joe Kapp bequeathed $3.2 million to the health service, or which $465,000 was used to fund the roof top solar project.

Joe and Monica Kapp are long term residents of Ararat and strong supporters of East Grampians Health Service.

Through funds bequeathed from the estate, EGHS has also established the Joe Kapp Scholarship.
