DESPITE being in the middle of an icy winter, the weather was kind to the volunteers and locals who joined with Ararat Landcare and workers from Ararat Rural City Council for last weekend’s tress planting program.

Council staff assisted volunteers by using their machinery to dig good sized holes to assist the volunteers to plant 102 native trees.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings were cold, but that didn’t deter the army of volunteers completing their task.

We asked Landcare member Margaret Burbidge why was the group was so determined to plant more trees in urban Ararat.

“Studies have shown that trees offer so many advantages to humans in an urban environment. Shade for buildings, roads and people is the biggest one, by reducing the amount of sunlight on buildings and pavement as it reduces the amount of energy and heat from asphalt, cement, brick that’s absorbed and re-radiated into the air,” she said.

“Have you ever wondered why sitting under the trees at the Alexandra Lake is really pleasant on a hot day,” she asked.

“It’s not just shelter from the sun, trees take up moisture from the ground through their roots and draw it through the xylem tubes in their trunk and branches and puff the vapour out their leaves through little units called somatas, sort of like an evaporative air con. The stomatas also suck in carbon, double whammy of advantages,” she said.

Ms Burbidge encouraged people across Ararat to do their bit to green up their properties.

“Have a go planting a couple in your yard or your nature strip if there is a gap.”

“Ask council workers or Landcare voluteers for advice for a tree that suits you, your yard or your environment. Get them in now, late winter, early spring is best for them to settle in, not too hot.” Ms Burbidge said.
