ARARAT Rural City residents will notice new purple and green bins starting to appear in their communities over the coming weeks as part of council\u2019s new waste and recycling program, Revolution Ararat.<\/p>\n
Revolution Ararat is council\u2019s commitment to reducing the amount of waste delivered to landfill by introducing a new residential four-bin system collection that separates waste, recycling, organics, and glass, as part of Victoria\u2019s waste reform.<\/p>\n
Spanning over the next eight weeks, purple and green lid bins will be delivered to all residential properties under five hectares by council staff members.<\/p>\n
Residents with over five hectares will receive the three-bin system, which excludes the organics bin. Collections of the new purple glass-only and green organics bin will commence from 3 October 2022.<\/p>\n
Ararat Rural City Council CEO Tim Harrison said council is adopting Victoria\u2019s waste reform which offers households a four-bin system in a massive recycling overhaul to reduce waste going into landfill by 80 per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil has taken this opportunity to reform our waste and recycling services by bringing this in-house, meaning it\u2019ll create new local jobs and reinvest savings back to our community,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving oversight over our waste and recycling helps us plan a more sustainable future, reduce the amount of waste delivered to landfill and reap the rewards.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur vision is to process our organics into compost and use recycled crushed glass in council\u2019s roads and construction projects across the municipality.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rollout of the kerbside glass-only collection is the first step in our new recycling model, Revolution Ararat,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBroken glass in yellow recycling bins only makes the contents more difficult to recycle. By collecting glass separately, we can make sure more of it is effectively recycled.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important to keep an eye on the type of glass that goes in the purple bin — the reason for this is that different types of glass melt at various temperatures and can affect the output of new products.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy collecting glass placed in the purple bin, Council is looking to transform these items into recycle-grade glass sand. This material can then be put back into our civil projects and used to create roads and footpaths.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will only work if residents play their part and pop the right items in the right colored bin – we can each have a massive impact in reducing landfill if we use our resources wisely.\u201d<\/p>\n
The purple bin will be collected every four weeks on the allocated recycling bin day, whereas the Green Lid Bin (Organics) will be collected fortnightly. For Ararat Residents your current collection day will not change the zone details will be as follows:<\/p>\n
