ARARAT’s Salvos Store needs the local community to dig deep this winter

By donating warm clothes and blankets, local residents will be helping others and will earn a discount at Salvation Army stores.

The Salvos are encouraging the local community to dig deep into wardrobes and linen cupboards for warm items to donate to ensure their store is kept stocked with winter woollies during the colder months.

This July, anyone who donates warm winter clothes to Salvos Stores will receive a 20% discount voucher which can be used in-store or online, meaning savings on great value products.

Captain Greg Turnbull said rising costs and a cold winter have meant warm clothing and blankets are in short supply.

“Donations of clothing, blankets and doonas are more needed than last year. This year, with the homeless crisis, it’s the worst it has ever been in terms of people finding accommodation,” Captain Turnbull said.

“The homeless crisis is Victoria wide. You just have to go out to Green Hill Lake to see it.”

“We’ve got to define the term homelessness, What does that look like? It doesn’t necessarily mean people sleeping rough under the stars, it might be people couch surfing,” he said.

Captain Turnbull said the Ararat shop needs more winter items to help people in need.

“We’re looking for good quality warm clothing, blankets, quilts, beanies and scarfs, it’s not only for the homeless but also for people living locally who cannot afford to buy new items,” he said.

“We want to ensure that we have the right stock for our customers. This is why we are calling on the public to take a look in their wardrobe and see if they can spare a few winter items this chilly season.”

Donations can be left at the Salvation Army Shop at the corner of High and Vincent Streets or at the collection bin in the IGA carpark.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Red Shield Appeal raised around $6,000 from the Ararat community.

“The (virtual) appeal was fairly similar to last year which was great to see, considering we haven’t been able to do the doorknock due to COVID.”

“The local community have been incredibly generous,” Captain Turnbull said.
