A proposal from the Green Hill Lake Development Board to construct a walkway around the entire lake has received overwhelming support from the public.<\/p>\n
Close to 30 people attended a public meeting last week where the proposal was discussed at length.<\/p>\n
The board is seeking council support to apply for government funding for an all abilities walking track around the entire seven kilometres of the lake.<\/p>\n
Currently, the walking track only covers about half the lake, preventing walkers, runners and cyclists from doing the entire circle.<\/p>\n
Board member Morrie Allgood said last week\u2019s meeting attracted a good cross section of the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were 27 people at the meeting and many of them were young people which is great because we want new and fresh ideas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very much in the early stages. We haven\u2019t decided on a lot of things yet, we just had a quick discussion on where it might go.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo former council employees Don Philips and Barkly Vincent have agreed to be our go-between the group and the council,\u201d Mr Allgood said.<\/p>\n
The meeting attracted cyclists, walkers and representatives of Ararat Park Run.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people of Ararat definitely want it (the track), there\u2019s no doubt about that and what it could do for Ararat would be amazing,\u201d Mr Allgood said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe footy clubs could use it for training, Park Run could use it for some of their events, bird watchers and others.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe track into Ararat (township) is already made, part of the track around the lake is already made so it\u2019s just for us to finish it off and make it go right around the lake,\u201d Mr Allgood said.<\/p>\n
The Green Hill Lake Development Board has committed $10,000 towards the project and will seek government funding in partnership with council.<\/p>\n
A sub-committee has been former to progress the lake walking track proposal and new members are encouraged to join.<\/p>\n
