ARARAT Rural City Council has partnered with a local school to support and provide applied learning opportunities for senior secondary students as part of their VCAL studies.

The council-run program will support three Year 11 students from Marian college by covering the cost of their AUSTSWIM course and provide mentoring sessions led by Ararat Fitness Centre aquatics co-ordinator Judy Young.

Council CEO Tim Harrison said council’s mentorship program will help guide the next generation of Ararat swimming teachers to attain a nationally recognised swimming and water safety course, AUSTSWIM.

“The breath of ‘hands-on’ education on offer to VCAL students means there’s a range of directions and skills students can pursue beyond school,” Dr Harrison said.

“This arrangement between Ararat Fitness Centre and Marian College provides students with access to and the relevant learning environment and mentorship needed for them to attain their AUSTSWIM certification.

“Council is excited to welcome our newest AUSTSWIM students who wish to get teaching experience in Ararat Fitness Centre’s swimming program.

“Educating the next generation, who are passionate about teaching water safety, ensures Ararat Fitness Centre will have a healthy pool of swimming instructors to meet Ararat’s high demand and continue teaching crucial water safety skills to our community,” Dr Harrison said.

Students will partake in a minimum of 10 hours of face-to-face mentoring with Ararat Fitness Centre staff to complement their AUSTSWIM course, where a breath of topics from devising lesson plans to developing their skills in the water will be covered.

“Supporting local students so they have the knowledge and access to skills-based programs like this one is something Council is proud to deliver,” Dr Harrison said.

Trainee swim instructor Natasha Chandler is among a group of three Marian College students being mentored by Council’s aquatics co-ordinator Judy Young.

“The program is really exciting, fun and overall, something different that brightens up my week,” Ms Chandler said.

“I’ve learnt that teaching kids is a lot harder than I initially thought, but there is a lot of enjoyment in it. I also find that the kids are also teaching me things as well.

“I’m motivated by all the great opportunities that come with the program and the experience and success behind it too,” she said.
