ARARAT’s annual Christmas Toy Appeal has been given an early boost thanks to the local business community.

The Greater Ararat Business Network recently held a successful Christmas in July networking night at the Barkly Bar and Bistro with the proceeds going to Ararat Emergency Relief Committee.

The event raised $763, and last week the proceeds were handed over to committee member Captain Greg Turnbull from the Salvation Army.

GABN President Cam Conboy said his members were pleased to be doing their bit for a worthy cause.

“It’s great to be able to do something to help the Ararat toy appeal. We’re really happy to be able to help out,” he said.

“We as a group had a lot of fun at our Christmas in July function and hopefully this money will make a bit of difference with Christmas in December,” Mr Conboy said.

Captain Turnbull said a number of people in our local community do it tough at Christmas.

“Christmas is a time when families come together and celebrate and it’s always a hard time for struggling people who have to provide food for a family,’ Captain Turnbull said.

“Last year we provided hampers for ninety families and toys for sixty kids and every donation, big or small, makes a difference,” he said.

Captain Turnbull said with the rising cost of everyday items, he expected more demand on the service this Christmas.

“I’m guessing there will probably be more the way the economy is going,” he said.

“The last time we did welfare here we saw double the number of people so there seems to be extra need,” Captain Turnbull said.

Ararat Emergency Relief Committee works throughout the year providing food and financial support for local residents in difficult circumstances.

They hold a weekly food share program as well as support for things like utility bills, clothing, blankets and transportation costs.

The committee is made up of the Salvation Army, Anglican, Uniting, Catholic and Life Links Churches.

The Christmas Toy Appeal will be held again this year with local residents encouraged to leave new, unwrapped children’s gifts at the Ararat Advocate office, next to the Post Office.
