THERE was reason to celebrate on Saturday night when the bar at the Wickliffe Lake Bolac Football Netball clubrooms was dedicated to local legend and Life Member, Jack Veale.

Veale played 400 games in his career (234 at Lake Bolac, 140 at Golden Point and 26 interleague), was awarded life membership at Lake Bolac in 1964 and named in the club’s Team of the Era 1945-85.

His impact was just as significant off the field at a league level, where he was instrumental in launching under-13 football in 1967.

Former Lake Bolac centreman and fellow Team of the Era player, Peter Lloyd, presented the following tribute to Jack.

On behalf of the Red Shed social group and the Wickliffe Lake Bolac Football Netball Club, it is my honour and privilege to acknowledge the enormous contribution to the Lake Bolac Football Club, and the sporting district in general, of the legendary Jack Veale.

Jack’s career started at Golden Point in the Ballarat Football League, playing 10 seasons in Juniors and Seniors, winning the BFL Under 18 best-and-fairest, and four successive junior premierships. He was Best-and-Fairest for Golden Point in 1950, and runner-up in the League Henderson Medal (by ½ a vote). He shared in two senior premierships. He was named in Golden Point’s Team of the Century at centre half back.

Jack arrived back at Lake Bolac as Captain-Coach in 1954 aged 23. This heralded a golden era for the club. Jack coached Bolac on and off for nine seasons, winning two flags. He played in another three premierships, the last in 1965 under ex-Geelong wingman Hugh Routley, and was named in the three best players in all five flags. He was club Best-and-Fairest twice, in 1959 & 1964.

Fearless and skilful, he was regarded as a great leader who led from the front.

Jack represented the MDFL on 26 occasions, winning five interleague Beaurepaire Shields. In his 19 games as Captain-Coach, they won 15. He was named vice-captain and centreman of the LBFC team of the post-war era. He shared the rooms with such local legends as Bill and Boss McMaster, Jim Knight, Russell Park, Alick, Lindsay & Neil Robertson, Kenny Phillips, Freddy Drever and many more. The team of this era would have been a premiership threat in the Hampden, Ballarat, Wimmera or Western Border leagues.

Dennis Bolster, another long-standing mate of Jack’s, has recalled the time he and Jack accompanied Robbie Veale when he won the Sunkick final at the MCG in 1971.

Robbie was interviewed on “World of Sport” on the Sunday, where Bob Davis, the famous “Geelong Flier” was a panel member. Bob had left Golden Point as Jack’s star was rising, and after catching up with Jack, he took Dennis aside and told him Jack was one of the best footballers he ever saw who didn’t play VFL football.

Jack was President of the Lake Bolac club for a record 10 years, and in 1964 became a Life Member. He loved the game and the club so much that he played until the age of 43, after 400 senior games, 234 with LB.

But Jack’s legacy doesn’t end there. His children Karen, Sue, Glen and Clark represented the Lake Bolac and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac Football-Netball Clubs with distinction. Glen played over 330 senior games for the two clubs, and even coached their arch-rivals SMW Rovers for two seasons.

Now his grandchildren, the Clelands, Clarks and Veales are representing teams far and wide. Five generations of Veales have played for Lake Bolac and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac since its inception in 1880, when Jack’s grandfather was the inaugural President.

I doubt there has been a more illustrious career in country and provincial sport in Australia than Jack’s. I’m sure you’ll all agree that it’s very apt that the bar of the Wickliffe-Lake Bolac Football Club should be dedicated to the local legend that is Jack Veale”.

To rapturous applause, a surprised and delighted Jack humbly thanked the crowd, encouraging players to keep playing for as long as their bodies could, as he had enjoyed a long career. He also joked that people had called him a rough and tough player in the past, but he reminded them that he had never been reported in all his years of football.

Peter also thanked locals Kel Murray and Nar Robertson for their efforts in facilitating the celebration and providing most of the statistics and details about Jack from their research.
