MOYSTON-Willaura coach Aiden Lee is no stranger to the odd “dark year” on the field.

Despite being a part of a dynasty of success at Navarre prior to his appointment as Pumas coach, a brief stint with a struggling Great Western in 2017 gave Lee an insight into the other side of the coin.

One which would prepare him for his first year in charge at Moyston-Willaura, where winning games has taken a secondary role on the list of priorities.

“It is a weird feeling, but you try and find the positives in a dark year as best as you can,” he said.

“The results haven’t been in our favour at all and people always look at the results but at the moment we look at the positives with how well we’ve played in patches and how far we’ve come.

“We took away the focus on winning and got back to enjoying things and you get real enjoyment out of seeing how much you’ve improved.”

This first season of transition, which has seen significant player turnover, is nearly at its end for Moyston-Willaura, which will head into its final two matches of the Mininera season looking for its first win.

But despite results not going their way, Lee believes his side has shown plenty of positives and found lots of enjoyment out of improving every week.

“We’ve had a fair few players come and go but the ones who have stuck around have really enjoyed themselves and they’ve said the exact same thing that, while we’re not winning, they’re enjoying it more than previous years and at other clubs,” Lee said.

After narrowly going down to Great Western earlier in the season, Moyston-Willaura will get its shot at redemption when the two sides meet this weekend.

Great Western sits in tenth place with only two wins this season and looms as a chance for the Pumas to pick up their first win of 2022, particularly with up to six players potentially set to return.

“We were up at half-time last time we played them and inaccurate kicking let us down in the second half. We were so good in the first half, but it was a different story after that. We can take it right up to them if we want to, but it’ll come down to who turns up on the day,” Lee said.
