MEMBER for Ripon Louise Staley says neighbourhood houses will receive recurrent funding and greater certainty if the Liberal Nationals Coalition wins November’s election.

Ms Staley visited Ararat Neighbourhood House on Monday to outline the coalitions funding promise.

She said the commitment will end the uncertainty in the sector created by the current government and will guarantee the future of Victoria’s neighbourhood houses.

In 2018, after a significant campaign by the sector, which was supported the Liberals and Nationals, additional funding ($5.4m per annum) was provided to Neighbourhood Houses Victoria (NHV).

“Everyone who received this funding believed it was recurrent and utilised it for core services and purposes for their communities,” Ms Staley said.

The commitment that it was recurrent, resulted in staff being placed on permanent contracts and programs being established to run well into the future.

Ms Staley said to be later told by the Government it was not recurrent funding caused significant stress to many neighbourhood house managers and workers.

“I have had contact with many neighbourhood houses in Ripon, who have faced significant uncertainty due to Daniel Andrews’ unwillingness to make new funding for neighbourhood houses recurrent.”

“Neighbourhood houses, like Ararat Neighbourhood House, provide a vital community service and important way for the community to come together and connect.”

“Neighbourhood houses are great because they respond to their communities needs and this one (Ararat) is just a prime example of that. Any day you can come here and there will be people doing appointments for employment, there’s the food hub, there’s art and craft activities and they’re helping countless people apply for their power saving bonus,” she said.

“By securing the future of Victoria’s neighbourhood houses, we are investing in the community’s access to a whole range of services.

Ms Staley said the Liberals and Nationals recognise the important role neighbourhood houses play in strengthening health and wellbeing outcomes for local Victorian communities.

More than half of the over 400 neighbourhood houses are located in regional Victoria.
