FORMER Ararat resident Jack Ward is well on his way towards a career as a television reporter after moving to Melbourne earlier this year.

Most Ararat Advocate readers would know Jack.

He came to work for this newspaper aged 16 when we started in May 2020.

But Jack had been eyeing off a job in the media well before the Advocate started up.

At 14, he was the driving force behind AC News – the digital news platform developed by Ararat College. He also ran his own weekly news podcast Ararat’s Latest.

Since commencing a bachelor of journalism at RMIT, Jack has been offered an extraordinary opportunity to work within the Channel Nine newsroom as an assistant to the Chief of Staff.

“Working at Nine News has just been the biggest opportunity I could ever ask for. As soon as I walked in that door the support has been incredible.

“I’m enjoying every moment of it and I think it complements my studies very well because it is that practical side of the craft and learning from the best in the industry at the same time,” Jack said.

“I work in the heart of the newsroom on the chief-of-staff desk. It’s the information hub of the newsroom, so it’s where all of our information comes in whether it be news tips, PR pitches and working with our news crews and sending them to particular stories.

“We’re also constantly liaising with emergency services about incidents that are occurring and pass information on to reporters, producers and all parts of the newsroom,” he said.

Jack said he eventually wants to work full time in the television industry.

“Since I was a little kid, broadcast journalism has been the ultimate dream. Growing up as a kid in Ararat, Nine News was always on at six o’clock of a night time so be actually in the newsroom is surreal and I’ve kind of turned from the fan boy into a colleague of people I’ve watched for so many years,” he said.

“It has been a fun kind of move into a different kind of look into tv news than just watching the tv and realising how it actually unfolds.

“I’m still learning every single day how it comes together,” Jack said.

“The work with Nine and the study complement each other incredibly. Being able to work in a newsroom while studying is the best way to learn I think and I am learning so much,” he said.

Jack was named Student Journalist of the Year by Youth Journalism International in May 2020.

He was also year 12 Dux of Ararat College in 2021.

Jack graduated Ararat College as Year 12 Dux and moved to Melbourne in early 2022.

He is currently Assistant Chief of Staff at Nine News Melbourne and studying a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) at RMIT.
