SHANNON Decker celebrated a hometown win as she shared first place in the Ararat Endurance Ride lightweight division last Saturday.<\/p>\n
Decker was one of 110 horse and rider combinations which participated in the annual event hosted by the Ararat Pony Club.<\/p>\n
84 per cent of riders successfully completed the 80 kilometre ride with the best conditioned heavyweight horse being Pureheart Fragglerock, ridden by Jake Verspanndonk, middleweight being Eaglehawk Halima Bea, ridden by Tabitha Schmetzer, and lightweight being Barinya Nacoma, ridden by Lena Charnley.<\/p>\n
All three riders came in together, finishing in a time of 5:01:46.<\/p>\n
Riders came from as far as New South Wales and South Australia and ranged in age from nine to 83 years old.<\/p>\n
The Ararat Pony Club had nine members participating in the ride.<\/p>\n
The event kicked off with a series of training rides on Saturday, a 20 kilometre ride which was undertaken by 13 riders, all of whom vetted through successfully at the end, as well as a 10 kilometre training ride.<\/p>\n
Riders got a great insight into Ararat\u2019s beautiful surrounds riding through the hills and alongside the wildlife.<\/p>\n
Sunday saw an early start, as 38 keen riders set out at 5am for the 80 kilometre ride.<\/p>\n
Riders embarking on the 40 kilometre ride departed at 7:30am, followed by a second 20 kilometre ride at 9am.<\/p>\n
The vet ring was busy with riders from all three rides going in and out. The vetting team of Helen Spencer and Morgan Clugston, led by Head Vet Leslie Hawson did a sensational job over the weekend.<\/p>\n
To promote new careers after racing, Off the Track donated a prize for the best recovered thoroughbred, won by Croquembouche, ridden by Kelly Cass.<\/p>\n
SPPHAV-HRV Hero also donated a prize for best recovered standardbred, won by Hopkins Park Serendipity, ridden by Ella Leehane.<\/p>\n
