FINALS are as much part of Tatyoon’s DNA as the brown-and-gold on its guernsey.

Their presence in 12 of the last 15 Grand Finals has not only earned the Hawks marquee status, but that of the Mininera’s premiership gatekeepers.

As the 2022 season rolled, on the knocks on their door stopped and the pounding began.

Rather than coming from its opposition, the trouble which threatened to barge in and derail Tatyoon’s season came in the form of injuries and unavailability on mass.

But even with the Hawks having to use 40 different players during the season, their credentials as the league’s dominant force never wavered, as they went on to win 15 of 16 matches.

While the Hawks are still a few players down on the eve of their Qualifying Final against Lismore, head coach Zac Tunbridge is confident his team’s system will continue to overcome the obstacles thrown its way.

“I think we’re pretty happy with our system. It’s stacked up well throughout the year and we’ve only lost the one game so I don’t think there’s anything too drastic that needs changing,” he said.

“We’ve still probably got a few [injuries] I think we’ve found this year any team we’ve put out is just as capable. Any team we put out on the park is us at full strength for us.

“Just about every team has been struggling with COVID or the flu at some stage. It’s been about the battle of the fittest this year rather than whose had the better list.”

Despite only losing the one game this season, the Hawks finished second behind the undefeated Ararat Eagles, which will await the winner of the Tatyoon vs Lismore match in the Major Semi Final.

Tatyoon defeated Lismore by 19 points in their previous meeting earlier this season, with Hawks Ben Clay kicking a game-high five goals.

While the Hawks would have been disappointed to miss out on another minor premiership, Tunbridge believes will be better off not having the week’s rest.

“In country footy I think it’s better to keep going. You have that week off and your guys probably don’t get that same level of intensity when they do train in the week off,” he said.

Tatyoon will meet Lismore at Woorndoo Recreation Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
