MUSIC lovers will flock to Ararat Town Hall in October for the long awaited return of the Grampians Brass Festival.

It’s the first time in three years Ararat City Band has been able to stage the festival after cancellations in 2020 and 2021.

Around 120 musicians will perform at the festival on Saturday the 1st of October from Geelong West Brass Band, Footscray-Yarraville Brass Band, Ballarat Memorial Concert Band and Western Brass.

Grampians Brass Festival co-ordinator Amy Stevens said Ararat City Band members are excited the festival will finally return.

“It’s wonderful to be able to host it again and bring some great entertainment to Ararat,” she said.

“We have four community bands from across Victoria who will present an entertainment repertoire.

“It’s based on entertainment rather than skill and ability and it really is more than hymns and marches, it is modern brass banding at its best,” she said.

Ms Stevens said the festival also gives the bands an opportunity to show off their talents.

“It’s a friendly competition. We do invite each band to supply a judge for want of a better word. It’s all about their entertainment value, their costumery, the music they present, the added effects they use to bring that music to life whether its dancers or singers or visual effects and their overall entertainment value,” she said.

“It’s really about having a fun and enjoyable night that reaches a broad audience rather than strictly their ability and how well they play their music,” she said.

“We’re hoping for some great audience numbers. It is a rare opportunity to see some of these very prestigious brass bands coming to regional Victoria and hopefully people will come out and see us.

“The individual bands have been working away in their band rooms but none of us know what the individual bands will present, but in the past we’ve had everything from Freddie Mercury of Queen to a circus arrive in town, we’ve had the Mexicans come, we’ve had all sorts of things in the past,” Ms Stevens said.

“It’s a really great night and appeals to a broad audience. It’s just fun,” she said.

Ms Stevens said the festival also has an economic benefit for Ararat, bringing over 100 people to town for the weekend.

“They’re all out of towners and quite a few have already booked their accommodation, they’ll be eating in town and it’s a great chance to encourage them to come back and visit when they don’t have playing obligations and spend some time here exploring the area,” she said.

Grampians Brass Festival will be staged at Ararat Town Hall on Saturday the 1st of October starting at 7pm.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. School aged children will be admitted free.
