TIMING is everything – especially in finals.

To say Tatyoon weathered the storm of the influx of injuries and absences which saw upwards of 40 players represent the senior team this season would be understatement.

The Hawks did not ‘weather’ anything. They smashed it.

A club built on strong foundations from the ground-up across all grades, Tatyoon’s depth receives dean’s honours for its capacity to put the club in a position to contest for another Grand Final.

Upwards of 40 players have been used in the senior team over a season which saw the Hawks finish second, dropping just the one game.

It is a season which has impressed senior coach Zac Tunbridge, who has praised his squad of 45 ahead of Saturday’s decider against the Ararat Eagles.

“We’ve had great depth all year which has covered us when we’ve had a lot of injuries,” he said.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve had a lot of guys come back fully fit, so we’re pretty lucky to have a fit list and that depth. It’s great having 40 to 45 guys rocking up Grand Final week ready to go.”

The reserves will play-off in a Grand Final against Glenthompson Dunkeld before the senior side does battle with the Eagles.

The ledger is squared at a win each between Tatyoon and the Eagles this season.

The two clubs have not only set the benchmark on the ladder but also in the WJ Lewis Medal, with Ararat’s Jayden Wright and Tatyoon’s Anthony Rosatto finishing first and second respectively.

Tunbridge says he has enjoyed this new-found rivalry with the Eagles, which has risen from the ashes of near extinction to advance to their inaugural Grand Final.

“It’s been good. They’re a pretty strong team and I guess we are too. If you look back on the season I’d say it’s the two strongest teams that have made it to the end, it will be a good contest and good to see Ararat come from where they’ve been,” Tunbridge said.

“We’re still learning a lot about ourselves. We’re trying to work ourselves out as much as the opposition. If you try to focus too much on their good players then you lose that vision of what you’re trying to do yourself. We’ve got a lot of good players and use that to our advantage.

“Both are very good teams and good gameplans in place, so I think it will come down to who comes down most switched on.”
