ARARAT Fire Brigade has been keeping Ararat safe for almost 150 years.

The brigade is 100% volunteer operated and they are on the lookout for an influx of new members to join and help protect the community,

People living in Ararat who are interested in joining a motivated, friendly team of volunteers are encouraged to get involved.

The CFA provides full training for new members and run courses to teach people basic fireground practices, pump operation, fire safety awareness, first aid and leadership skills.

A new member information session is planned for early October to give prospective new members an overview of what the CFA is about and some of the many roles people play within the organisation.

Lieutenant Ash Turnham says no previous experience is necessary.

“It’s really important that we get new members to protect the community by allowing us to get trucks out the door a bit quicker,” he said.

“During the day we struggle. We have a big focus on anyone who isn’t working nine to five. Finding people available during those hours would be great, but we’ll welcome anyone we can get,” Lieutenant Turnham said.

“We’re looking for different people of different ages and different skills, whether they work in an office or a farm. Whatever skills people have they will bring something.

“It’s not all about the pager going off and hopping on the truck and heading off. There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff like community events, we do the market, community safety, fire equipment maintenance. Even if you are not interested in being a fire fighter there is still a role,” he said.

‘If someone has a truck licence they are already half way there.”

“There is a social element too. The last Sunday of the month we have a barbeque after we do our truck checks. You invite your family down for a bit of fun. We also have social events throughout the year. It’s a great group of men and women,” he said.

The information session will be held on Tuesday October 4th at the fire station in Tuson Street commencing 7.30pm.

More information can be found on the Ararat Fire Brigade Facebook page.
