THE innovative One Red Tree project continues to go from strength to strength, with project leaders holding high level meetings ay Parliament House seeking funding for the project.

Ararat based One Red Tree is the brainchild of Clinical Psychologist Carly Mckinnis and Education Leader Tammie Meehan.

In partnership with Federation University, the project’s aim is to become a centre of excellence in providing high-quality, evidence-based mental health care across the Ararat and Grampians region.

Through their work, Ms McKinnis and Ms Mehan both came to the realisation rural communities face critical shortages in mental health services and trained mental health professionals and decided a proactive program was needed.

One Red Tree Resource Centre – based at Ararat Railway Station – provides placement and employment opportunities to provisionally registered and early-career psychologists via their partnership with Federation University.

The partnership ensures the centre will have ongoing access to the staff needed to increase access to service, reach more community members, and reduce the cost of providing a high-quality service.

The collaboration with Federation University allows students to get supervised work placements, while vulnerable children receive free counselling in return.

The initiative caught the eye of Labor Candidate for Ripon Martha Haylett, who arranged a meeting recently with Minister for Mental Health, Gabrielle Williams.

Ms McKinnis and Ms Mehan discussed the work of their organisation with the Minister and how they are incorporating clinical psychological services, training, and education to meet the diverse needs of our rural communities.

They also discussed their four-year business plan to expand their service and become a sustainable organisation with a long-term future in the region, and how their work could connect with the government’s Mental Health in Schools initiative and the Local Adult and Older Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing Service that will open in Ararat from mid-2023.

Ms Haylett said One Red Tree is changing the game for Ararat and surrounding towns by improving much-needed access to mental health services.

“The sky’s the limit for this amazing grassroots organisation and I can’t wait to support them along the way.”

Tammie and Carly are helping grow our mental health workforce through their partnership with Federation University and Ararat Rural City Council.”

“Their workforce model is training up the next generation of rural psychologists, whilst also helping so many – and saving lives,” Ms Haylett said.

It’s hoped the meeting will lead to a funding commitment ahead of November’s election.
