ARARAT’s Golden Gateway Festival will make a welcome return in just over a month and nominations are open for a Festival Queen.

The organising committee is seeking nominations of young ladies between 17 and 26 years to preside over the ten day festival.

Organiser Melissa Perry said nominations have been slow this year due to the festival being cancelled in 2020 and 2021.

“We’re coming out of COVID. We’ve had two years without a Golden Gateway Festival and it isn’t front and centre in people’s minds at the moment.

“Every year, the festival ran like clockwork, people knew it was coming up and the girls were keen to be nominated, but because of the big break it is a bit out of mind, out of site,” she said.

“We take nominations from girls 16,17 up to 26. They have an entry form they fill out that includes interests, hobbies, ambitions, achievements and community service. They will have a ten minute interview with two judges to put themselves out there to be Queen and the successful applicant is announced at the gala ball on the Friday evening,” she said.

Ararat’s Isabelle Fiegert is the first nomination to be Festival Queen 2022.

She is a member of Ararat Pony Club, plays netball for Tatyoon and is currently doing her VCE.

Ms Perry is encouraging other young women to apply.

“It would be great to have some more girls jump on board. We understand the girls often can’t commit to the whole ten days but we will work around them,” she said.

Ms Perry said the committee was determined to return the festival to its former glory.

“Golden Gateway Festival is a tradition that has gone on for many years and it is unique to our town,” Ms Perry said.

“The festival is for ten days from the 21st of October to the 30th of October and we’re calling on all of our community to get involved again and bounce it back up to what it used to be,” Ms Perry said.

“There will be lots of activities this year. All our community events are coming back like pool competitions, shooting competitions, croquet, badminton, a mystery bus tour, there will be lots and lots of entertainment,” she said.

Nominations close soon for festival queen and nomination forms can be obtained by calling Ms Perry on 0409 253 276.

The Golden Gateway Festival runs from the 21st of October to Sunday 30th October 2022.

A full program of events will appear in future editions of the Ararat Advocate.
