By Athos Sirianos

IT was seven o’clock on a Friday and the regular crowd shuffled in.

Behind the bar stood Jodie, serving people beer, wine, tonic and gin.

“It’s great to be working here again,” she said, pouring a beer out of the Carlton Draught tap, as locals made the most of time before food was served to catch up.

It was the kind of event, with the kind of crowd, committees dream of hosting.

And Buangor smashed it over the Western Highway last Friday night with its inaugural community dinner.

The energy bouncing off the blue stone walls of Buangor’s Cobb and co at the town’s long-awaited community dinner was more than enough to inspire a new wave of optimism after the pandemic for the area nestled between two Shires.

Around 100 people filled a venue born again and ready to take on any event which comes its way.

“It’s the first one we’ve done and it was really nice to get everyone back together and make those connections again,” Buangor Primary School principal Sally Peacock.

Organised collaboratively by the primary school and local sports committee, those behind the night have set their sights on hosting similar events once a term.

Regular catch-ups for a drink, usually on a Friday or Sunday night, are nothing new for Buangor locals, whose community spirit is as strong as any town’s in the region.

While fully fed adults hung around the bar after dinner, the cohort of generation next kept ran up-and-down the stairs and made the most of there not being rain by spending the second half of the night outdoors.

It was fitting an event at the Cobb and co would be the catalyst for this new wave of excitement at Buangor, considering it was the community some, decades ago, which helped renovate the building, while also preserving a large part of its character.
