ARARAT Rural City Council has commissioned three new aerators in Alexandra Gardens Lake in a bid to prevent further cases of blue green algae.<\/p>\n
Council has invested around $40,000 on the new aerators which were deemed the best way of dealing with outbreaks of algae.<\/p>\n
Blue-green algae developed in the lake in March due to limited water flow and a high nutrient load in the water.<\/p>\n
At the time, council quickly commenced excavations works to allow water to flow more freely and placed an order for three new fountains (aerators) to help oxygenate the water.<\/p>\n
The new aerators were switched on Thursday lunchtime by Deputy Mayor Bob Sanders.<\/p>\n
Council CEO Tim Harrison said the installation of the aerators has been delayed by the wet winter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of trouble with the weather, it has been very damp underfoot and no one would have appreciated us ripping up the lawn. We waited a bit until it dried out to get the power connected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re confident the aerators will make a big difference by oxygenating the water making it harder for blue green algae to grow,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a $40,000 investment from council but I think it is worth it, they look good and it will help keep the water quality healthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe winter rain has flushed the lake really well but it doesn\u2019t take too many warm days for it to bloom. With new water coming into the lake comes nutrient load so we have to always keep an eye on it,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
