EVEN at 87-years-old, Ararat\u2019s Merv Fox says he is still learning when it comes to golf.<\/p>\n
This mostly stems from him being a late bloomer in the sport, waiting until his early 50s to pick up a golf club for the first time.<\/p>\n
A decision he would never look back from.<\/p>\n
While his time in the sport may be shorter than that of his peers, his contribution to golf in the Wimmera region has left a significant legacy.<\/p>\n
One which has not gone unnoticed.<\/p>\n
This week, Fox was presented with Life Membership at the Wimmera District Veteran Golfers Association, becoming just the seventh person to receive this honour.<\/p>\n
Fox served in 31 of the 38 years the association has been running; being part of the committee for 14 years and serving as president, captain and delegate to the Victorian Veterans for a decade.<\/p>\n
During his few years as president, the association grew to as big as 300 members and hosted up to 26 tournaments a year, in between weekly golfing events at Chalambar.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had some great times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe more or less played every fortnight and because clubs shared the events around, you
\nwould fill up a car with a few blokes and travel for hours to play a round of golf.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a big thing to be recognised with this achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the course, Fox had \u201ca bit of success\u201d with the Wimmera Vets, as well as representing the Victorian Veterans across 17 National tournaments, where he competed against 600of the country\u2019s best veteran golfers.<\/p>\n
Even at 87, Fox continues golfing (playing off a handicap of around 26), now in Beaufort where he is a member, and even took home first prize as recently as last week,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
