ARARAT dentist Charlie Reid has been recognised by his peers for excellence in his profession at a recent awards presentation evening in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
For 37 years, Dr Reid has been looking after the oral health of people in Ararat and district.<\/p>\n
The lifetime Dentistry Achievement Award was presented at the Australian Dental Association\u2019s awards night last Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a recognition for years contributing to dentistry,\u201d Dr Reid said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve had this practice for 37 years and over that time we\u2019ve done several stints with the school dental service and the prison and we\u2019ve got the hospital which we service with the theatre.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also do voluntary work in the Solomon Islands as well which I\u2019ve done over 12 years,\u201d Dr Reid said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis award is a recognition of the relationship we have built up with the local community and the work we do to the best of our ability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel very fortunate to have been able to practice dentistry as I have, when I have. For me a move from the UK to here was the best thing I ever did.\u201d<\/p>\n
After 37 years working in Ararat, Dr Reid isn\u2019t in a hurry to retire anytime soon.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had my 40 year reunion about a month ago and you start thinking about life after dentistry but I still enjoy what I do and I still have something to offer to the local community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Dr Reid said one of the problems his profession faces is finding qualified staff willing to relocate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sad thing is getting people to come and stay in the country is hard yet the life is great. Ararat is big enough for everything you need and small enough to have a community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt frustrates me that younger dentists don\u2019t see it (country life) in the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Reid said a great team and supportive family were behind a successful practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy wife Sioux has been an integral part of the business by setting up and running the practice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a good team, very dedicated, very motivated, a great bunch of staff,\u201d Dr Reid said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
