TELSTRA customers could face disruptions in Ararat from tomorrow (Monday) as the telco undertakes an upgrade of its transmission facilities.

Telstra advises that as part of its program to improve 4G and 5G capacity, the planned works will require a series of temporary outages or reduction in mobile coverage.

Telstra advises there will be no mobile coverage from its central Ararat site from Monday the 4th of December to Friday the 8th of December.

The mobile network will not be impacted on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of December but there will be further disruptions on Monday the 11th of December as Telstra completes its integration and call testing.

Telstra mobile customers will receive text messages advising of the upcoming work.

Landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.

Calls to Triple Zero from Telstra mobiles will be automatically connected via other working mobile networks.

Telstra Regional Manager Steve Tinker said crews needed to do the work during daylight hours for safety reasons.

He said the network will only be switched off when needed.

“There’s never a good time to undertake this sort of work but once it is completed it will mean better mobile services for local residents,” he said.

“As a company we heavily invest in improving regional connectivity and this site is another example of our commitment.

“Over the past seven years to the end of FY23, Telstra invested $11 billion in our mobile network nationally, with $4 billion of this invested in our regional mobile network,” Mr Tinker said.

Two weeks ago, a similar upgrade in Stawell led to a string of complains from local residents and businesses who were left without mobile coverage.

Businesses claim they lost trade as a result of the Stawell upgrade, with many unable to use their EFTPOS machines.

Mr Tinker told the Advocate, he didn’t expect the outage to have the samed impact in Ararat.

“Yes the outage is similar however we do have another mobile site in Ararat on One Tree Hill which will provide some coverage in town.

“The work is being done on the rooftop at the Ararat exchange and no doubt we will see capacity challenges at times and some areas with less coverage. When completed we will see additional capacity and capability of both 4G and 5G networks which will mean a better experience for users.

“Most modern EFTPOS machines can connect not only via a mobile network but also via Wi-Fi from an NBN connection or even by hot spotting to a mobile phone which may be using another available network,” Mr Tinker said.
