ARARAT Fitness Centre’s swim program is back with a splashing new curriculum to teach young residents how to swim.

Ararat Rural City Council Chief Executive, Tim Harrison, is pleased to see young swimmers embrace the swim school program.

“Over 250 students are enrolled for this swim term which goes to show there’s confidence in the programs on offer at Ararat Fitness Centre,” Dr Harrison said.

“Learning to swim is a vital life skill and the Ararat Fitness Centre recognises the value of a quality program – we’re always looking at ways to improve the experience for students and families,” he said.

The Ararat Fitness Centre’s swim program for children is based on the Royal Life Saving Swim and Survive curriculum which now offers a new level structure. The new structure offers more flexibility and opportunities to increase the learning outcomes and overall experience for infants and children.

“We’re really fortunate to have a passionate team of AUSTSWIM-qualified instructors that want to help young ones access water safety education which sets them up for a life of reduced drowning risk,” Dr Harrison said.

Ararat Fitness Centre Swim Program Coordinator, Judy Young, assesses each child’s ability to find the best ‘Little Wonders’ level for them and as they progress, children will be able to easily move up to the next level to focus on specific skills and strokes.

Susan Gardner, a swimming teacher for six years, was happy to have some of her young students back in the water again.

“The ages I teach range from babies to 13-year-olds. Teaching babies is different to school kids – it’s rewarding seeing babies’ faces after a splash or a kick.

“Being back in the water is great, I’ve missed the kids heaps and can’t wait to get them back in the pool,” Ms Gardner said.

With over 55 years of experience, the Centre is fortunate to have instructor Wilf Dickeson who teaches all ages from prep through to adults.

“Swimming and water safety has been a large part of my life,” Mr Dickenson said.

“One of my favorite things about teaching is helping children achieve the many complex skills required to master the strokes and safety drills. It’s especially rewarding when they master a skill/drill they’ve been attempting many times,” he said.

Mr Dickeson said it’s important to get children back into regular swimming lessons so they can help catch up on their swimming and safety skills.

“You always have concerns with kids around water and safety is paramount, so regaining their confidence and relearning vital skills requires constant practice,” he said.
