RADIO host Alex Dyson has announced he will make a third run for the seat of Wannon at the next federal election.

Mr Dyson made his announcement on Wednesday, saying he was “extremely honoured” to be running as a candidate.

It will be his third attempt to win the seat off the Liberals Dan Tehan.

“I’ve been uplifted by the community support since I first ran six years ago, and encouraged by the inroads other Independents are making at bringing integrity and long-term thinking to Canberra. It’s time for our local area to have our voice heard too,” he said.

“Together, let’s get a better deal for Wannon,” he said.

Mr Dyson has the backing of the Voices of Wannon group which is expected to receive funding from Climate 200, backed by Simon Holmes a Court.

Mr Dyson first ran for Wannon in 2019 where he secured 10.3% of the vote.

He again ran in 2022, outpolling the Labor Party with 19.2% of the primary vote.

The 2022 contest saw a two party vote of 46.1% for Alex Dyson and 53.1% for incumbent Dan Tehan.

It’s is understood Climate 200 will again back a climate focussed candidate in Wannon.

Climate 200, the fundraising giant that bankrolled the teal independent wave at the last election, has already named nine more seats it will support, including Wannon.

Each of the selected campaigns met Climate 200’s initial criteria for support, which includes support for climate action and restoring integrity in politics. The candidates will receive grants of up to $50,000 to help them further their campaigns.

Climate 200’s executive director, Byron Fay, said the group had raised more than $1 million from more than 1,300 donors who contributed to its community accelerator fund, which aims to support new grassroots independent campaigns.

At the last election the so-called “teal independent” campaigns, named for their green views on climate in traditional blue Liberal seats, were successful in North Sydney, Wentworth, Goldstein, Kooyong, Curtin and Mackellar.

The Wannon electorate is one of the biggest in Victoria, stretching from the surf coast to the South Australian border.

It incorporates all of Ararat Rural City, the southern half of Pyrenees Shire, Colac, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Portland.
