FIONA Tipping is the only candidate running for this year\u2019s election under the banner of a political party.<\/p>\n
With the backing of the Victorian Socialists, Fiona is keen to make Ararat a better place to live for all residents.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving a long history of working in the community sector of the Grampians, Pyrenees and Central Highlands including Ararat, I was privileged to be able to purchase my home in Ararat over four years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI chose Ararat because I developed a genuine love for this community. My motivation for running for council is to work with other councillors and community to amplify the voices of those that so often go unheard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She said it was important for Ararat to be an inclusive community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking in disability, employment and First Nations communities I firmly believe we need to provide the same opportunities for everyone to thrive. It makes good business sense to do so as everyone has a skill that needs to be valued. Not all business revolves around short term profit. We need to provide opportunities that everyone can access to ensure they can choose to stay and thrive in this town for the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n
As an indigenous woman, Ms Tipping is also keen to embrace traditional culture and knowledge.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would love to see us celebrate our community of First Nations people as the oldest living culture in the world.\u00a0 As a proud Palawa, First Nations woman, I was brought up to be inclusive of all. We don\u2019t see disability as a deficit. We celebrate and value our Elders for the wisdom and knowledge they pass down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSkills I bring (to council) are a proven track record for lobbying various Governments to improve outcomes for marginalised individuals and groups. Participation in numerous Royal Commissions and Parliamentary Inquires, written and verbal. Extensive media exposure. Most importantly I bring honesty and diplomacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am being endorsed by Victorian Socialists because I am tired of the same old recycled systems that clearly are not working for most of us. We need to try something different to combat this high cost of living and housing crisis. I hope to bring this to Ararat at a local level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
