LOCAL police and members of the public gathered last Monday to remember police killed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n
The annual National Police Remembrance Day at Ararat\u2019s Anglican Church is a solemn occasion dedicated to honouring the men and women who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.<\/p>\n
Led by Anglican Church Priest and Ararat Police Chaplain, Father Martin Nadarajan, this year\u2019s service remembered 19 police members.<\/p>\n
Senior Sergeant Elissa Smith said she was delighted with the large turnout.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s good for us to remember them, and it\u2019s good for the public to be a part of that as well.”<\/p>\n
Superintendent Sharon McCrory, reflecting on the day, said it was a moving occasion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the second year since I\u2019ve been here, and for me, it\u2019s quite moving because it shows that connection with the community. It\u2019s always a sombre day because it\u2019s about the members we\u2019ve lost, not just in the line of duty but also those who have passed away over the last year.”<\/p>\n
Superintendent McCrory also expressed how the day is both emotional and meaningful, highlighting the importance of community involvement in the remembrance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a sad day, but it\u2019s a beautiful day at the same time because we get a chance to connect. Father Martin has done a wonderful job during his time here making it into a service instead of a quick event and raising a flag.\u201d<\/p>\n
She noted the importance of the event being open to the wider public, allowing for a deeper connection and reflection.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sends a message that we are human beings as well, and we hurt when we lose one of ours.\u201d<\/p>\n
