ARARAT\u2019s Lois and Peter Williams recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, tying the knot back in 1964.<\/p>\n
Their romance blossomed in the traditional Ararat-Stawell way, with Lois recalling how, in those days, “The boys went to Stawell to get the girls, and the Stawell boys would come down here.”<\/p>\n
Lois used to visit Ararat for the dances at Alexandra Hall, and it was one of those evenings where their story began.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe met up the street one night. I was with a friend, and Peter was there. My friend was talking to the other boy, and I got talking to Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n
The couple enjoyed other activities together as well, including fishing. Peter quipped, \u201cShe kept me busy,\u201d<\/p>\n
They both remember the early days of their marriage vividly.<\/p>\n
Lois recalls the church talk they had before their wedding, where the priest doubted their marriage would last because they were so young.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe often say we\u2019d like to have seen him when we got to 50 years. We\u2019d like to see him now, but he\u2019s probably passed on. We proved him wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the couple’s passions has always been travel with kids in tow.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve always done everything together,\u201d Lois said.<\/p>\n
Peter also fondly recalled being the family driving instructor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI taught the kids and Lois to drive. I\u2019d say Lois was the hardest, she\u2019d get out of the car, and say \u2018you drive\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peter\u2019s secret for his successful marriage is to know who\u2019s boss.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019ve seen things change over the years, had some good times and bad times.”<\/p>\n
Now, with four daughters and eight grandchildren, the Williams have turned their attention to a shared hobby\u2014orchid growing.<\/p>\n
They frequently attend orchid shows, and this love for nature has been one of the many things that continue to keep them connected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
