By Ellen Anderson.<\/strong><\/p>\n LAKE <\/strong>Bolac\u2019s first-ever Speed Shear attracted a crowd of more than 800 over the weekend with 85 entrants testing their skills as they competed across four categories.<\/p>\n Hosted at the Lake Bolac Hotel, the event was dedicated to the memory of local shearer Muni Ratana, who passed away last year, a loss felt by the Lake Bolac and shearing community.<\/p>\n Lake Bolac Hotel owner Dianne Toulson said the idea of a Speed Shear event came from Muni\u2019s wife, Judith Ratana.<\/p>\n \u201cShe said we should do a Speed Shear here to commemorate his life, and I said yes, we\u2019ll do it with you at the pub,\u201d Dianne explained.<\/p>\n Despite the challenges of co-ordinating the event, Judith said it was a meaningful tribute to her late husband.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s heartfelt. It brings us together. Many of us don\u2019t get to see each other often, but when we have an event like this, it\u2019s a chance to connect.\u201d<\/p>\n Locals pitched in to make the event a success with everything from the sheep to the stage.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been a really big community effort,\u201d Dianne said.<\/p>\n The event was a deeply community-driven effort with a total prize pool of $10,000.<\/p>\n Even the kids took part competing in the \u201cShave Shear\u201d allowing youngsters to \u2018shear\u2019 foam off mock sheep using sponges, giving them a feel for the craft.<\/p>\n The annual event is hoped to become a regular on the local calendar honouring Muni Ratana\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" LAKE Bolac\u2019s first-ever Speed Shear attracted a crowd of more than 800 over the weekend with 85 entrants testing their skills as they competed across four categories.
