ARARAT CFA is offering a free assessment for people who own private fire-fighting equipment this weekend.

People who own their own fire fighting equipment can bring is to the fire station in Tuson Street on Sunday for a chance to have equipment assessed.

The aim is to enhance cooperation between the brigade and private owners and ensure safe practices for community members who assist with fire response.

Michelle Turnham of the Ararat Fire Brigade emphasised the importance of private equipment.

“We welcome any private gear, trailers, trucks, or anything locals use during fires on their properties. It gives us a chance to chat to those in the fire prone areas and get information from them to see what its looking like out there,” she said.

The day will also include CFA truck safety checks, along with the distribution of guidelines on how to safely operate private vehicles and equipment during fires.

“Private vehicles are a valuable resource. They are very helpful on the fire ground, but we want to make sure everyone is safe on the fire ground and everyone can communicate with each other,” Ms Turnham said.

Captain Ashley Turnham said it was important for strong relationships with local owners of private equipment.

“I’ve been to a lot of jobs since moving here, private vehicles turn up on scene before we even get there.”

“It’s a bit of peace of mind. Knowing that there are extra private vehicles out there than what CFA have.”

Chris Coad, a farmer and member of the Maroona CFA, said private units have been an integral part of local firefighting.

“Private units are very important. If you have a basic unit, it can put out a fire right away. It only has to last 10 minutes, by then the CFA or other private units will come.”

He added that private equipment is essential in preventing fire reignition, especially during busy fire seasons.

“Out at Pomonal the fire trucks were going to the front of the fire trying to get that, and all these little units at the back of the fire were mopping up.”

The Safety Day is this Sunday the 17th November, from 9am to 11am at the Ararat Fire Station in Tuson Street.
