JO Armstrong has returned to Ararat’s top job after a meeting of the new council on Tuesday night.

At council’s statutory meeting, Cr Armstrong was nominated by Cr Peter Joyce and seconded by Cr Bill Waterston.

She was elected unanimously for a 12 month period as Mayor.

In a reversal of roles, outgoing Mayor Bob Sanders was nominated for the position of Deputy Mayor by Cr Armstrong and seconded by Cr Teli Kaur. He too was elected unanimously.

“It’s the responsibility of our Councillors to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for each term,” says Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison.

“This process demonstrates council’s solidarity, and their nominations reflect a sincere commitment to serving the best interests of our community.”

Councillors elected to have a one-year term for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

“A one-year term will allow the council to reassess, and re-evaluate their direction each year, and continue to work with changing community values,” said Dr Harrison.

Newly elected Mayor Jo Armstrong said she was honored to be elected as Mayor.

“Thank you for your trust and confidence in me and I look forward to serving our community to the absolute best of my ability, and to uphold the values of council through open communication and effective teamwork.”

Cr Armstrong paid tribute to outgoing Mayor Bob Sanders for his leadership over the past year.

“Cr Sanders, your service over the past year has been very much appreciated and your positivity and your enthusiasm for getting things done has been a really important factor in the achievements made by council over the past term.

“I think your leadership in Pomonal particularly has made a very lasting impression on the people who were impacted by the dreadful fires in February and it’s really fitting that you were acknowledged as a champion of the community in the recent citizens awards that were presented,” she said.

Cr Armstrong has also made special mention of Peter Beales who was defeated at the recent election.

“It does feel very odd to me to be in this room today without Peter Beales.

“Peter and I commenced our service together in 2016 and Peter definitely knew more than a thing or two about local government and thank goodness he did because we survived a fairly dysfunctional council term and came through the other side of it to rebuild the council.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Peter Beales for his eight years of services as a Councillor in Ararat Rural City and for setting such a great example of civic service,” Cr Armstrong said.
