ELMHURST residents will soon see a vast improvement to their water supply, with a major upgrade of the town’s water treatment planned for 2022.

GWMWater has called for tenders for a contractor to undertake works on a new water treatment facility at Elmhurst.

It follows a campaign by the Elmhurst Development Group for the water provider to upgrade the quality of water being supplied through the town’s reticulated water network.

Currently, water supplied to Elmhurst is considered ‘non-potable’ and is untreated.

GWMWater said water will be sourced from Hickman’s Creek and treated in line with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and will be designed to allow for a future connection to the East Grampians Rural Pipeline.

GWMWater Managing Director, Mark Williams, said an upgrade in water quality means a safe and reliable water source for businesses and residents in the town.

“A secure water supply will boost the liveability and future growth of our towns, opening up further opportunities for tourism in the region,” Mr Williams said.

“A fully treated drinking water supply means businesses will no longer need to rely on rainwater tanks or packaged water for drinking and food preparation; they can quickly and easily access quality water straight from the tap,” he said.

Pressure upgrades have been completed in Elmhurst with further mains flushing and pressure boosting to be carried out as needed when drinking water is being supplied.

Elmhurst Development Group President, Geoff Penna, said he’s delighted GWMWater are proceeding with the upgrade.

“People have noticed the water isn’t up to standard even though they’re quite prepared to drink it, but with the influx of people in recent years to get out of the metropolitan areas, they come with some expectation of good water,” Mr Penna said.

“If we want to continue to provide services for people to come to town, we have to have the amenity for them,” he said.

“Whether it’s at the bush nursing centre or the hall for functions, we shouldn’t have to buy water in, but that’s what we have to do,” Mr Penna said.

Mayor Jo Armstrong said improved water is important to communities, big and small.

“It’s about a consistent standard of water, for people to know they can turn on the tap and they’re going to get a reliable standard of water that is safe for their family to use and safe for business use,” Cr Armstrong said.

“It’s perfectly legitimate to want to have better, safe water to come out of your tap,” she said.

Elmhurst Bush Nursing Centre Manager, Kerry Cattanach, said a commercial kitchen at the centre cannot be used to its potential because Elmhurst currently has untreated water.

“We had to put a filter under the sink but now that’s no longer acceptable, we have to have potable water which we don’t have and it affects our commercial kitchen. It’ll (the new treatment plant) will make it fantastic,” she said.

The upgrade is part of GWMWater’s 2018-2023 Water Plan, along with treated water upgrade projects at Moyston, Ultima and Kaniva.
