ARARAT residents will soon be able to hear Wimmera based radio station 3WM on the FM band as part of an upgrade of transmission facilities in Ararat.<\/p>\n
Ararat Rural City Council has approved plans to upgrade the Ace Network\u2019s transmission site on One Tree Hill.<\/p>\n
Council CEO, Tim Harrison, said an amendment to a planning permit issued in 2020 has been approved and will lead to improved radio reception for people across the district.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe proposal is for a new transmitter on One Tree Hill to boost the radio service around Ararat and Stawell for Mixx FM and support the translation of 3WM from AM to FM transmission,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe amendment was needed to allow the transmitter to function on renewable energy as the powerlines are not able to be quickly extended to this site,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The change to the permit caused a \u201cmodest\u201d increase in the footprint of the area required on One Tree Hill from 6×4 metres to 5×20 metres to accommodate the solar panels.<\/p>\n
The changes also require a 21 metre pole and a four-element version of the same antenna, rather than the previous two-element arrangement.<\/p>\n
There are 30 solar panels proposed to run the transmission site.<\/p>\n
Mixx FM can be clearly heard across Ararat from its broadcast point at One Tree Hill, however AM station 3WM can often have scratchy reception, as its transmitter is located almost 100 kilometres away near Horsham.<\/p>\n
Ace Radio told the Advocate the new 3WM signal on the FM band should be up and running in a few months.<\/p>\n
