A dangerous intersection on the Glenelg Highway will soon see improvements to slow down traffic.

The intersection of the highway with the Eurambeen-Streatham Road at Streatham has long been regarded as dangerous with several accidents and a recent fatality.

A woman died after a crash at the intersection in October.

A government spokesperson confirmed to the Advocate there have been eight recorded crashes at the intersection in the ten years between mid-2014 and mid-2024.

October’s crash takes the number of fatalities to two.

These crashes also include four serious injury and three minor injury crashes.

The government spokesperson said a new roundabout will be constructed to improve safety at the Eurambeen-Streatham Road, Glenelg Highway and Woorndoo-Streatham Road intersection.

“Final designs are currently being completed for a new roundabout to slow vehicles to safer speeds and provide better turning movements for trucks,” the spokesperson said.

“The new roundabout will slow vehicles to safe speeds and provide safer turning movements for trucks turning north at the intersection.”

A speed reduction will also be implemented from 100km/h to 80 km/h approaching the roundabout from Streatham and the works will include the installation of street lighting to improve visibility at night.

The government said plans will be made publicly available once they’ve been finalised.

Member for Lowan and Deputy Nationals Leader Emma Kealy raised the issue in parliament shortly after the most recent fatality.

“My constituency question is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, and the information I seek is: how many people will have to die on the Eurambeen-Streatham Road and Glenelg Highway before the roundabout is completed?”

“It is so devastating to hear that just last Sunday we lost another local life at this extraordinarily dangerous intersection.

“We did see in 2020 that the federal and state governments put money towards installing a roundabout. But here we are four years later, the roundabout has not commenced and we have had another fatality.

The Victorian Government has indicated the redesign of the intersection will commence in 2025.
