YOUNG Ararat bowler Ruby Jackson has been selected to play with the Murray Mallee Bushrangers in the prestigious Flapper Shield.

The statewide tournament which is for under eighteen bowlers will be held at the Sebastopol Club on the 15th of January.

Ruby has been training for the event on Monday nights for the past five weeks at the Sebastopol Club with the Ballarat Nuggets which is for players aged eight to sixteen.

For non-bowlers, the shield is named after Matt Flapper who has represented Australia on many occasions and is a household name in bowls circles.

Ruby who is fourteen years old will be in year nine this year and attends the Ararat College.

She started being interested in bowls whilst going to watch her father Brad Jackson play pennant every Saturday with Ararat.

With the Ararat B Grade Gold team being short of players she got roped in to playing and has not looked back.

Ruby’s grandfather Steve Jackson has been club champion for the previous two years and Ruby continues the family involvement with the club.

During the off season, she plays netball with the Moyston Willaura Pumas.

Recently, a fundraiser BBQ for her was put on by the club which was very well attended.

This was a prelude to the club championship final between Mick Dowd and Peter Paterson.

Many patrons stayed on for the afternoon to enjoy a cold beer and watch an epic game of bowls.

Mick had previously been club champion five times and Peter who has been a long-time member of the club was playing for his first.

In an even first half of the game the scores were level at 12 all, then Peter with excellent draw bowling skipped out to a 21 to 12 lead.

Unlike other sports like football where you can run down the clock and other bowls events over a set number of ends you have to get to 25 to win the championship.

Mick with his experience of five wins was not going to lay down and Peter started to lose his line and all of a sudden, the scores were 24 apiece.

In a gripping last end Peter who had the last bowl had a metre to drawn shot and win the game but fell agonisingly short to end a highly entertaining match with both playing to a very high standard.

Congratulations to Mick Dowd on winning his sixth club championship and well done to Peter Paterson on a great game and coming so close.

YOUNG Ararat bowler Ruby Jackson has been selected to play with the Murray Mallee Bushrangers in the prestigious Flapper Shield.
