A CHARITY sporting event featuring veteran footballers and netballers set down for Ararat\u2019s Alexandra Oval next month is the latest event to fall victim to COVID-19.<\/p>\n
Organisers of the Grampians Community Health Our Community, Our Families Over-40s Charity Football and Netball Games have postponed the August 8 event until next year.<\/p>\n
The event was to be the third held since Grampians Community Health teamed with former AFL and Ararat football legend Scott Turner to launch the charity event.<\/p>\n
Money raised from the event was to have allowed GCH to implement a support program for grandparents caring for their grandchildren battling drug and alcohol addiction.<\/p>\n
Kate Astbury from GCH said organisers met on Tuesday night and made the tough decision to postpone the games because of uncertainty surrounding COVID.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy decision for them to make, because they\u2019ve invested a fair bit of themselves in it and they\u2019ve done a fair bit of work,\u201d Ms Astbury said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is disappointing, but they want the event to be as successful as it can be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Astbury said organisers were hoping to reschedule the games to the end of March.<\/p>\n
She hopes the warmer weather at that time of year will attract a huge crowd, resulting in greater profits for the fundraising event.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully the COVID cloud won\u2019t be hanging over our heads by then and perhaps we can have a community celebration for everyone to get out and about and have a bit of fun,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Ms Astbury said the committee of about six had done a brilliant job organising the event and securing sponsorship from local businesses.<\/p>\n
At this stage, local businesses have handed over $4,600 in cash sponsorship while others have donated services or products to raffle on game day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe community, especially local businesses, have really gotten behind the event, and we look forward to showing them our thanks,\u201d Ms Astbury said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
