A SECOND week of abandoned matches has thrown football leagues across the region into turmoil with league officials scrambling to work out how the end of the season will pan out.<\/p>\n
Both Wimmera and Mininera District leagues were forced to cancel last Saturday\u2019s rounds of matches, but clubs were still waiting yesterday for formal notification of what will happen with this weekend\u2019s round.<\/p>\n
Under Victoria\u2019s current COVID lockdown, football and netball games cannot be played tomorrow.<\/p>\n
This is the second consecutive round matches won\u2019t be played.<\/p>\n
The Wimmera league cancels lockdown effected rounds as they occur in an effort to not affect the current finals schedule.<\/p>\n
The MDFL adjusted its draw midway through the season to compensate for abandoned rounds. League officials are keen to see teams play each other once this season which, given the latest interruptions to the schedule, will leave the remaining three rounds in doubt.<\/p>\n
AFL Victoria has given the nod to leagues to reschedule finals matches, including grand finals, at their own discretion, but this depends on the availability of grounds and the transition to the cricket season.<\/p>\n
If time doesn\u2019t allow a finals game to be rescheduled, AFL Victoria has ruled that the team on top of the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season will be named premiers.<\/p>\n
The governing body has thrown another complication into the mix, with leagues facing mandatory delays if another two rounds are abandoned.<\/p>\n
AFL Victoria\u2019s COVID functional framework states clubs must be granted a minimum seven-day training period before the season restarts if four to six consecutive rounds have been abandoned.<\/p>\n
The season can restart at the next scheduled round at the discretion of the league if one to three consecutive rounds have been abandoned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
