THE first six months of 2021 has been solid for the merino industry with all micron categories currently trading at a higher price than at Christmas 2020.

The Southern Market Indicator began the year at 1134 cents/clean and is currently at 1369, as we enter the midseason recess.

The 17 micron indicator and 18 micron indicator have both lifted 31%, the 19 micron indicator has lifted 27% and 21 micron indicator is up 14%.

Merino wool market looks very solid going forward. Fine wools look like they will remain near current levels, with supply and cashmere prices dictating any price movements.

Overall, merino wools could strengthen as there is a higher degree of optimism among exporters and brands are talking about upcoming collections at trade fairs that are now in full swing.

The crossbred market has not preformed as strongly only lifting 9%.

COVID-19 has really affected the crossbred market with hand knitting yarns, quilt fillings and furnishings struggling for consumer demand.

The highlight of wool sales in early July was a local woolclip, Elders Ararat offered in their Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) sale catalogue at the National Wool Selling Centre, Brooklyn.

Measuring between 18.5 and 21 micron and exceeding expectations, the prices achieved were 14% higher than the market (which finished flat).

The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is an international standard that addresses animal welfare in sheep farms and a chain of custody of wool from certified farms to the final product.

Goals include recognising the best practices of farmers, ensuring wool comes from farms with a progressive approach to managing their land, from sheep that have been treated responsibly, to create an industry benchmark that will drive improvements in animal care, land management and social welfare.

RWS aims to provide a robust chain from farm to final product so that customers are confident that wool in the products they choose meet RWS standards.

Elders Ararat are pleased to offer wool producers this option if they choose to market their wool down this path.

Wool Manager Craig Potter said Elders Ararat is an accredited auditor and can guide wool producers through the journey.

“Globally, the future looks very bright for all types for wool as this is the fibre of the future- natural, soft, elastic, absorbent, warm, cool, hypoallergenic,” Mr Potter said.
