MILDURA was again a happy hunting ground for harness racing participants from the Ararat area.

Great Western’s Sam Barker, a regular driver at Mildura, teamed with trainer Sandra O’Connor to win the Vale Maree Sparkes pace with Fire House Rock.

From barrier four Wayne Hill aboard the favourite Alfs Odyssey, was keen to have the lead. Barker obliged by accepting the trail behind Alfs Odyssey.

Without a sprint lane to help his cause, Barker needed a gap to get off the fence. Hill provided the opportunity when he tried to gain a break on the field down the back straight the last time.

Unfortunately, for favourite punters Alfs Odyssey had nothing left to hold off Fire House Rock, who in turn was able to fend off late challenges from Ironbark Fella and Hidden Figure. The winning mile rate was 2.03.8 for the 2190-metre trip.

Irymple based O’Connor currently has seven horses racing. Her racing colours of dark blue with a white Maltese cross appear frequently at Mildura.

From an owner’s point of view, Great Western resident and current Ararat Harness Racing Club treasurer Mark Fulton, enjoyed success with Lizzadro.

Trained at Myrniong by Jess Tubbs and driven by Greg Sugars, Lizzadro made the long trip to Mildura worthwhile. After settling in the running line mid field, Lizzadro was pushed back further in the field as other horses made their move forward.

Sugars bided his time until releasing the brakes with 600 metres to go. By the time he straightened for the run home the race was in his keeping, officially scoring by 12 metres in 2.01.2. This is Lizzadro’s third run back from a break from racing and is win number three from 24 starts.

Finally at Mildura, Kate Hargreaves and Alex Ashwood again combined to win with Animado. In his 10-start career Animado has run a place on eight occasions, including four victories. This win was by a comfortable seven metres in a time of 1.59.6 for the 1790m mobile event.

Not often a horse is listed as being beaten 350m and supporters were thankful, but Michael Bellman was very thankful. With 400m to run, See You There was sitting outside the leader, See You There (trained and driven by Richie Caruana) stumbled and fell, causing interference to the horse following him; Miss Tyler (trained and driven by David Miles) who as a result of the interference also fell.

Bellman was next on Madam Auckland – despite being severely interfered with by the two falling horses Madam Auckland kept her feet and Bellman remained in the sulky.

The stewards report advises Miles and Caruana each sustained a fracture to the left wrist and concussion. Fortunately, both of the fallen horses suffered minor abrasions.

Both drivers will require a medical clearance before race driving again. Both of the fallen horses require a veterinary clearance before racing again.

Due to the current COVID lockdown, Harness Racing Victoria have returned to racing without crowds. Only licensed persons with a horse engaged and required staff for the race meeting are able to attend. There is also a reintroduction of temperature checks on entry.

Memory jogger:

Ararat trots, May 2011: There was a large local representation.

Peter Manning had four runners and won with Secretive Lombo and Leilani Lombo (both owned by Mick Lombardo) and both driven by Kerryn Manning. Lombardo was a prolific breeder/owner within the harness racing industry. He gave the Lombo moniker to all his horses and raced in his colours of white, red Maltese cross and red armbands.

Mick Bellman drove Jerry Marshall to win for well-known Stawell sportsman Terry Croton. Bellman also won with Allawart Toby for the late Geoff Foreman from Dooen.

Grant Campbell won driving George Samuel (for Trevor Monk) and Tartan Art (Rodney Summers).
