A recent uplift in development interest in Ararat Rural City is showing no signs of slowing down, with a record number of planning permit applications approved last year.<\/p>\n
Of the 125 planning applications received over the past financial year, 120 were approved, delivering a combined project value of $18.8 million.<\/p>\n
The projects approved includes new housing construction, subdivisions, home extensions and sheds.<\/p>\n
Council chief executive, Tim Harrison, is pleased to see investor confidence continuing to grow in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite challenges from the pandemic, the 120 applications we received far exceeded the state-wide rural council average of 27 applications annually,” Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
Last year, Council adopted Greenlight, a web-based system that streamlined permit and planning applications across the municipality.<\/p>\n
\u201cImplementing a new system has been a game-changer for Council, the Greenlight portal helps us build better communication links between builders, residents, council, state bodies and the wider community,” Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn average, planning applicants will be notified of a decision within 46 working days, compared to the state average of 102 days in similar rural areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy streamlining the application process, we\u2019re saving our team hours that can be put into processing more projects for the municipality while providing a simpler, faster and more accessible service to help encourage further development activity,\u201d Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsing the online platform also gives residents easier access to information when notified of proposals near them \u2013 they can simply log on and view the plans and assess them without needing to visit the office,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Developments range from residential upgrades such as the addition of a dwelling, or a home extension, to larger buildings and structures for farms like storage and shedding.<\/p>\n
