ARARAT Landcare members have started replanting hundreds of native trees and shrubs around Ararat\u2019s iconic Green Hill Lake.<\/p>\n
Landcare members met with the Green Hill Lake Development Board in October to draw up plans to replant native species around the lake.<\/p>\n
The priority is a number of \u201cbare\u201d areas around the lake precinct comprising of low lying shrubs and larger trees.<\/p>\n
The Development Board had been concerned that some areas around the lake had been looking \u00a0sparse and approached Landcare for help.<\/p>\n
Volunteers commenced planting this week at the front of the toilet block.<\/p>\n
Landcare member John Mawson said a variety of species are included in the planting program.<\/p>\n
\u201cAssorted natives, there are some climbers, a lot of little ground covers so that we get a bit of traction for birds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll probably be planning hundreds of plants over the total exercise but today we\u2019ve put in about 50 plants, with lots to go,\u201d Mr Mawson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe other part of the project is to reinforce the planting of bigger stuff out the back. Ideally we would do it with natives that come from here but it\u2019s just sourcing them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the plans I grew myself, Steve Hughan donated some. We\u2019re looking for a source of plants that are endemic to here for the other native planting around the lake,\u201d Mr Mawson said.<\/p>\n
